Mayor’s May 2021 Letter on Trees and Blacktop Removal

The Pine Hills Neighborhood Association (“PHNA”) invites organizations and individuals to join us as we seek a vibrant reimagined opportunity at the Saint Rose campus.

PHNA supports the efforts of Albany County and the Albany County Pine Hills Land Authority (“ACPHLA”) in reimagining the former campus of the College of Saint Rose, located in the heart of Pine Hills. We appreciate that the Albany County Executive, the Albany County Legislature, and the Albany County Pine Hills Land Authority have stepped in and purchased the property to ensure that it does not decline due to vacancy and neglect. We also thank ACPHLA for initiating the strategic redevelopment plan for the campus (click here to read the RFP seeking consulting services) with CPL and Cresa who will be seeking public input.

We are aware that what happens on the Saint Rose Campus will also impact residents and taxpayers throughout Albany County, and we believe it is vital that community members and organizations from all around Albany County engage with the process of redevelopment and have our voices heard. We want ACPHLA to ensure the process is robust, engages the whole community of Albany County, and recognizes that this project is taking place within a larger context beyond Pine Hills. We believe that by collaborating with groups and individuals, there will be a more powerful impact reflecting the vision of the entire community.

To that end, Pine Hills Neighborhood Association has developed the statement “Our Community Re-Imagines Saint Rose” below and is inviting organizations, businesses, and individuals to show support for this collaborative effort by joining with other community members and signing our Change.org petition.

Thank you for your participation as we work together to ensure the redevelopment of the Saint Rose campus reflects the hopes and needs of every community within Albany County.

Our Community Re-Imagines Saint Rose

The former College of Saint Rose campus has the potential to be a vibrant, safe, multigenerational space that welcomes visitors and residents of Albany County. This area should be active during the day and in the evening seven days a week with a balance of public, private, and commercial uses that include a mix of housing for renters and homeowners. The historic and modern buildings have character and promise to be used for a wide variety of activities including performing and visual arts, educational opportunities, community gathering areas, green space, retail locations, and offices, with resources, services, and activities for all. We urge Albany County Pine Hills Land Authority (“ACPHLA”) to complete this redevelopment plan before selling any properties, with the possible exception of the originally intended use.

The undersigned organizations and individuals look forward to actively participating in the upcoming strategic redevelopment process for the campus. The ACPHLA should ensure that the process has input from key stakeholders including the undersigned groups and individuals from throughout the county.
